If you ask me to pick  the best day trip destination from Hyderabad, without any second thought my reply would be Ramoji Film City. It’s an excellent place to spend a day and is a must visit. Some people say it’s overrated, but unless you have been to universal studio or something similar abroad, you will love the place. It’s huge, it’s interesting and it’s fun. Specially if there are kids in group, this place shouldn’t be missed.

Ramoji Film city is located around 40-50 KM away from city depending upon the route you take. The old route is from inside the city but now there is a new route via airport road which is longer but quicker to reach without much traffic on the way. It’s spread across more than 1500 acre and there are internal buses available to reach from one section to another.

You can either reach by your own vehicle or travel companies also run their buses but do check their timing in advance. If they reach around 11 you will be short of time as it is very difficult to cover entire film city in one day. The entry ticket for standard package is Rs. 600 for adults and Rs. 500 for children which are hiked by Rs. 100 during Christmas time when film city has extended opening hours. Tickets can be booked online or bought at the counter itself but be prepared for longer queues.

You can not take outside food into film city and has to be deposited at entrance. There are plenty of restaurants available inside along with snack counters but these are not part of package and has to be paid separately.  Once you cross the entry gate you will be taken by a bus to the central point of film city called Eureka and from there you can visit different sections one by one. You are also provided with a map which lists all the attractions inside along with show timings. You will need to plan a bit in advance as timings for shows like ‘Stunt Show’ are fixed and happen only twice/thrice a day.

Eureka also has some rides three of which are included in the entry fees. They are not very large in number but remember it’s not an amusement park :). The 360 degree rotation ride is just wow and should be your first ride before you eat much later in the day :). There are also some rides for kids but needs to be paid separately.

Rides In Film City

On the left hand side you can see entry gate to Kid Zone called Fundustan. If you have kids in group or have kid alive inside you, this section is for you. The entire area is very colorful and very good place to pics. There are various activities like rain dance, magic house, adventure rides for kids and a video game arena. Magic house will be enjoyed by kids but equally enjoyable by adults by admiring how beautifully it is built.

Background To Take Perfect Picture

The second major activity is a guided tour where a bus takes you various sets inside film city. There will be a guide on the bus which will explain about them and also mention movies which have been shot at these sets. There is set built which has a setup of mythological Mahabhart Era and is simply beautiful. The bus will stop here at 5 mins so that you can see sets from inside.

Mahabharat set

After taking you through sets like airport, central jail, village, gardens etc the bus will drop you near gardens from where you can walk through around 12 gardens which are used for shooting purposes as well. You can relax here for some time among shades. There is a butterfly park where you can see butterflies flying around various flower plants. There is also a set of Caves requiring a small walk of 4-5 mins through them.

Kripalu Caves

After taking lunch you can move to next section which has various shows. The movie magic show is a 10-15 mins show where they demonstrate how a movie is made and the roles of various technicians. There is another show called “Around the world in 7 minutes” where you are taken through beautifully built sets of various countries. The third and the most interesting show is the “Stunt Show” where a group will act on a story and has live action sequences. It’s just like live movie action.

Around the world in Seven Minutes Set

During Christmas time there are dance shows and DJ in the evening time and entire Eureka area is full of lights. The buses get ready for exit and take you to the same point from where you had entry in the morning. It will be fun filled day and I am sure you will find something which you haven’t seen before.

Tips :

  • Plan to go in a big group to enjoy more.
  • Best time to visit will be winter season as it becomes very difficult to roam around in summer in heat.
  • Take Guided tour around 3-4 in the afternoon so that by the time tour ends it’s almost evening and you can roam in gardens. At noon time you will not enjoy gardens much so utilize that time in indoor shows.
  • Be prepared for crowd and queues everywhere. The place is visited by thousands of visitors everyday. If possible try to got on weekday when it will be comparatively less crowded.
  • Do not go for 360 degrees ride after lunch for obvious reasons.
  • Be prepared for plenty of walking independent of which tour you take. Eventually buses will drop you at certain points and then you will need to walk to see a section.

Well written… thanks… One query, can I cover Ramoji City in one day or I need two days to enjoy the city?

    • Makrand 13 March, 2014 at 11:18 AM Reply

Thank You Amit :). If you visit early in the morning then you can see most of the place in one day. There are two days packages available with a night stay in hotels inside but they will be on expensive side.

In my opinion a one day tour would be enough.

Thanks a lot… I don’t want to stay their… I will be in Hyderabad for 5/6 days.. Is there any other place where I can go and come back in single day?

    • Makrand 13 March, 2014 at 4:58 PM Reply

In Hyderabad you can spend 2-3 days visiting various sites. If you are interested in visiting temples you can go to SriSailam jyotirling which is around 4-5 hours drive and can be done as a day trip.

There is also a dam called Nagarjun Saagr (5 hours drive) but in summer months not worth visiting. I think for summer time there are not many places where you can go for day trip so better spend time visiting sights inside city.

If you are visiting in summer, be prepared for the heat. Hope it helps.

How to go from hi-tech city, APSRTC bus will be vavailable?

    • Makrand 10 August, 2014 at 12:50 PM Reply

You can get local public transport to reach Ramoji but you will have to change buses 2 times. Don’t know the bus numbers but first you will need to go till Koti and then change the bus from there. Best would be to hire a private vehicle or take a bus from tour operators who arrange buses for both ways from Hitech City

can you please let me know how to book for one day trip

    • Makrand 27 August, 2014 at 2:54 PM Reply

For one day trip you can buy tickets directly from counter once you reach there. If you want a bus service for pick and drop then you may contact a local travel agent.

Can u plz tell me vl it b worth to visit in rain ?
Can v enjoy in rain r it vl jus b a waste ???

  11. Makrand 15 April, 2015 at 9:44 PM Reply

    Hi Sejal,

it would be difficult to enjoy in heavy rains. if it drizzles for some time then it would be fine.

Most of the place is open so can’t be enjoyed. There are indoor activities but then again going from one place to another in rains won’t be good idea. I haven’t been there on a rainy day but can imagine how a day may turn out.

hello, it is interesting and useful to read comments. I am visiting hyderbad on 18th December 2015 for one week and want to use this one week for best places to see and experience with my family. appreciate if i can get advise. also how many days out of this 7 days enough for local site seeing of hyderabad, two days for ramoji film city and then remaining days any nearby places to visit?

    • Makrand 27 September, 2015 at 9:30 PM Reply

      Hi Manish,

2-3 days should be sufficient to see majority of the well known places in Hyderabad. If you have time you can make a visit to vishakhapattnam (also known as vizag) for 2-3 days which is 12 hours from hyderabad by train. There are some good places like araku valley and beaches in vizag. If that’s not feasible then rest of the time can be spent in visiting near by places like Shrisailam jyotirling which is around 5 hrs drive from hyderabad, suryalakna beach (should be around 5-6 hours by road) n few more places which can be looked on tripadvisor or any other forum. But personally I can’t think of any great place to visit near by hyderabad which is 5-6 hrs away, they all should be ok.

Thanks Markand for your reply and it is useful. Just a final advise, how many days needed to see ramoji film city fully. Is one day enough to see properly or two days required? I mean if we start say around 9:30 seeing park, will we able to complete all places by evening?

    • Makrand 14 December, 2015 at 12:55 PM Reply

      Hi Manish,

One day would be enough if you reach around 10 and stay there till 6-7. There are two days tour available but the accommodation would be very expensive inside. You can check the rates on their website I believe.

coming October 21th to 23rd i will be in Hyderabad along with my family members. Our planing is to Visit Ramoji Flim City 23 rd October and that day we have our train for Vishakapatnam 8.30 at night.is it possible complete our Ramoji Tour from Morning 10 to Evening 5?

    • Makrand 21 August, 2016 at 8:25 PM Reply

      Hi Saikat,

Your plan is slightly risky as ramoji film city is located far outside city and traffic in city would be at peak during office hours, so better to leave around 4 so that you have sufficient time in hand and don”t need to rush along with your family members. Distance from station would be around 25-30 km but traffic can cause significant delays. Time taken from your hotel to Filmcity would also give you an idea about time required in evening and you can leave accordingly. Note that buses from packaged tours leave only on scheduled time so if you plan to leave early then you need to have your own hired vehicle

Hi I am planning to visit Ramoji in Oct 1 & 2. Require your suggestion should I book hotel outside Ramoji and visit two days to see Ramoji or should I book hotel inside for better experience.

    • Makrand 6 June, 2017 at 9:16 PM Reply

Stay inside Ramoji depends on your budget as hotels are expensive inside. Generally people do a day trip to Ramoji film city or stay inside for a two days tours. I am not aware of any hotels near by ramoji film city but there are one day tour available from all parts of the city
