Disclaimer : Information contained in this post is updated as of  7th July, 2013.  Please check with embassy for latest updates.

One of the important step in planning a trip to Turkey on your own is to understand visa requirements. Though the documents required for visa application is comparable to requirements of  Schengen Visa, the process is quick if you have all documents ready.  They just want to make sure you will not overstay and have sufficient funds to bear your expenses during approved time of stay.  The embassy in Mumbai also responded to my queries via email with a very less turnaround time.

There are two options for getting a Tourist Visa for Turkey :

1. On Arrival Visa : Indian passport holders can get On Arrival Visa if they already hold a valid Schengen Visa. As mentioned on Wikipedia, applicable rule for Indian Passport holders is – , “Visa on arrival for maximum stay of one month for holders with valid Schengen or OECD member’s visa or residence permit”.  In addition to that you first need to get e-visa as per latest changes. You can find information on this link : https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/. This was not applicable for me hence this is not first hand information. Please double-check with embassy before you consider this option.

2. Applying for Visa from India:  In case of any doubt its better to get Visa beforehand from India. Following is the list of documents that are to be submitted along with the completely filled application form.

  • Visa application form filled with 1 white background photograph
  • Two recent passport size photographs not older than 3 months
  • Original passport with a minimum validity of 3 months and minimum 2 blank pages
  • 2 photocopies of passport
  • Confirmed return airlines ticket
  • Hotel Reservations
  • Trip Itinerary
  • 3 months salary slip
  • Original Bank Statement (With a minimum balance of Rs. 1 lakh per person) of last 6 months
  • Photocopy of Credit Card
  • NOC letter from company
  • Original Leave Sanction Letter with company seal.

Important :

1. Make sure leave sanction letter is on company letterhead with company seal. Also should contain the signature of authorized person from company.

2. Bank statement should have bank seal in original.

3.  Though the process takes 2-3 working days but still apply in advance to have sufficient buffer time. In case you are asked to submit any additional document, you must have sufficient days before your travel date to resend the document.

You can submit your application in person if you are in Mumbai or Delhi, otherwise it is easier to take help from a travel agent who can submit documents on your behalf.

Please see the following documents that I received from Consulate General of Turkey, Mumbai.

Hi, thanks for the information. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thinking of a Turkey trip this spring, and all my googling only led me to sites that explain the process for Indian passport holders with valid schengen visa. While I have quite a few schengen visas, none are valid and I am looking only to travel to Turkey. So thank you. I just needed to know what the requirements were, and if my travel agent could submit the docs for me.

I want to know that is there any other way to get a visa for Turkey on Indian Passport, and is there any other way out for having minimum 1 lack INR for last 6 months? is there any other option that can be used if I dont have 1 lack for last 6 month?

      • Makrand 4 August, 2016 at 8:44 PM Reply

        Hi Apurva,

Even if your current balance is above 1 lac and was not during last 6 months, you can take chances. Maintaining a healthy balance is to increase your financial credibility over a period of time. The whole idea is to convey embassy that you can afford your travel and have sufficient balance with you. Consult a travel agent also for a second opinion.

      Hi Rohit,
Welcome to my blog. Glad to know that we share same interests. Having a blank passport is a concern when you apply for European countries, but I believe for Turkey it should not be a big hurdle. Please make sure you submit all documents correctly. If you apply through a travel agent still take special care about document from your end. You can find documents check list in the post. Go through it carefully and even you can contact embassy by dropping an email about any doubt you have.

Do sufficient research about the places you want to visit in Tureky, so that you can utilize your money/time effectively. July/ August is the peak season to visit there. Do check about weather conditions for the month of your visit.

Let me know if I can assist in any way.

How long i can stay thr on tourist visa.. is it 1 month or 3?
i can provide all the documents need from my friends whatever needed.

    thanks and regards

    Hi Kamal,

I guess you will need to mention that in your covering letter that you are not working at the moment so can not provide latest salary slips and submitting the ones you have when you were working. But please also mention that you have sufficient funds with you to bear expenses even though you will be staying at your friend’s place.

You will need an invitation letter from your friends containing their current address, passport numbers and occupation. I would suggest to contact embassy or a travel agent who can provide exact format if any. Also I am not sure about Turkey but some countries do require that your host have invitation letter attested from local police station so make sure to confirm about it. It would be best to call Turkish Embassy and get these clarifications

Tourist Visa i issued for 3 months.

      Hi Veer,

In Istanbul you can visit Sultanahmet area which is the oldest and most popular area. A lot of tourist spots like Blue Mosque are located in that area close to each other so in short span of time you would be able to visit many spots. If you get more time than you can visit Princess Island for a half day tour.

    Hi Sheena,

I had mentioned processing time along with visa fees. It’s minimum 3 working days but it may take more time if embassy asks for any additional document. It is possible to get visa as there are 10 working days in between. Time remaining is less but you can take your chances and hope to get the visa in time.

      Hi Ruhiya,

Evisa is only available for Indians if they hold a valid Schenghen Visa, else you need to apply visa from India.

You have got very limited time to apply from India. If your planned travel date is early next week, then it would be very difficult to get that. The processing time is 3 working days but it may take more time. And if you are not located in Mumbai add the time(2 days) to send and receive passport by courier.

Get in touch with a travel agent immediately stating your travel date to check possibility of getting visa.

That means if you have earlier applied for visa to America or United Kingdom or European countries which is still valid(date of expiry has not passed) then that will mean valid UK/US/Schenghen Visa. e.g. I have visa from USA which will expire in say Jan 2015 then I can apply for e-visa. If I do not have any such visa stamped on my passport then I need to apply for Visa to Turkey in advance. let me know if it still requires clarification and would be happy to answer your question.

You will need to consult a travel agent or contact to confirm the procedure in such scenario, however I can give some inputs from my end.

      1. You will need a letter from your friends stating that they will sponsor your trip along with their passport copies.

      2. You will need to mention in covering letter about the same along with all required documents.

The purpose of all such documents to prove to embassy that you are able to take care of your expenses during your stay.

I understand that NOC letter from the Employer and Salary Slip is required, but as I will be unable to produce the same, I was wondering if there is any other way to get a tourist visa for Turkey. As in, any other documents that I can provide that will assure them that I will come back to india after my holiday is over.
The travel agents here in India seem clueless and trying to call Turkish Embassy, but no reply so far.

We are going for a business discussion and this is wht they have mentioned in the invite letter. Also they have asked to issue only a business visa. We have the invite company’s bank stmt and IT docs. so is there any possibility thru which we can get visa approval without having 1lac in OUR bank account?

      Hi Harsh,

Sorry I am not aware of rules for business visa so I will not be the correct person to advise on this. You may consult a professional agent in this case.

Although from the information on VFS page it states that you need to have a balance in your own account.

Your blog has been helpful confirming a lot of details.
However I have one doubt. I reside in Bangalore and have been here for a year now. My mother resides in Shillong which is my permanent address as well. We are planning a trip to Turkey this may and she is sponsoring it. However according to jurisdictions she must apply at Delhi embassy and I must apply at Mumbai consulate. Since she is sponsoring me, won’t it get complicated submitting documents at different locations. Do you have any suggestions ?

    Hello Makrand

I am travelling to Isreal and on my way back I am planning to visit Turkey. You had mentioned e-visa is valid only with Schengen Visa and I don’t have one. Following the e-visa link,https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/prerequisites/ I found the following excerpt,

” hold a valid supporting document (Schengen visa or a valid visa from any of the OECD member countries; or a valid residence permit of a Schengen or OECD country). e-Visas are not accepted as a supporting document. ”

Since Isreal comes under OECD, shouldn’t I be eligible for e-visa with a valid Isreal Visa.

    • sakina 4 June, 2015 at 5:28 PM Reply

      hi vivek,
u are eligible with israel or any schengen visa only if the mentioned visa is valid for your travel in turkey too.
eg: if ur israel visa is for 1st may till 31st may 2015 then your turkey travel shud also be in tht period nly.

      Hi Deepak,

As per my knowledge you will not be eligible for e-visa. e-visa is only available if you have a valid Schengen visa or a valid visa from any of the OECD member countries; or a valid residence permit of a Schengen or OECD country . Since Brazil isn’t a member of these groups, e-visa will not be applicable.

and i dont have any credit card so what to do with that?

    what is ltinerary

its my first oversea trip so please help me out

    • Makrand 12 September, 2015 at 12:20 PM Reply

ltinerary is your plan for entire trip. e.g. you will be in city A for 2 days then in city B for 4 days and then return.

If you are not salaried employee and if you are self employed then mention about your work/business in covering letter. In a visa application embassy are looking for answers to 3 questions most of the times – 1. Purpose of travel 2. Source of income to ensure you can bear your expenses 3. Reason for comeback to your home country. Also try to contact a travel/visa agent in your city to get his inputs.

      • Himanshu 12 September, 2015 at 12:30 PM Reply

What if i am doing planning by myself instead of any travel agent. Actually my purpose is for tourism, Now in turkey i have a friend of mine who is inviting me , so in that case what documents suppose to be submitted?

        • Makrand 12 September, 2015 at 2:04 PM Reply

I meant only for this specific question you can contact a good travel/visa agent. Most of the time travel agents are helpful and they will answer your basic queries. You can do all your planning yourself but only take services for visa application if you do not find sufficient information. It’s better to take help from visa agents initially as they have experience. Moreover if you are not in same city where embassy is then it becomes much easier to take help from them.as they can cross check documents ans also submit on your behalf. It you are located in delhi or mumbai then you can apply yourself.

As you have friend there you can ask him to send an invitation letter stating that you will stay with him. Also try to contact embassy via email or phone to get your specific questions answered. You may not be able to reach them sometimes but keep trying.

The email address is mentioned in the post consulate.mumbai@mfa.gov.tr for mumbai consulate. For Delhi it will be available on their website. Well the whole purpose of submitting employment related document is to show u have a reason to come back and have good income source. Ofcourse people who are not working also travel but then you need to have other means of making your application strong. If you are traveling with a family member then you can put their employment details and stating going as a dependent. Also show any property document in India. I would suggest to contact a good travel agent in your city and seek his advice.

    Hi Arjun,

We are a couple planning to visit Turkey and North Cyprus in Mar 2016. We do not have a Schenzen or UK visa. Would be applying for visa from the Turkish consulate in Delhi. Please let me know if an invitation is a must for Turkish visa. How do I procure this invitation? We do not have any friends there. Also, we would like to stay at Airbnb accomodation. Will Airbnb reservations be good to go? What was your experience with hotel reservations? Looking forward to your reply.

    Thanks in advance.

    • Makrand 7 November, 2015 at 4:58 PM Reply

Well Arjun can’t answer right now, so I will answer instead :D.

A good news for you is Turkey now has e-visa enabled for Indians. I didn’t know till today but just googled after getting your query and saw Indians are enabled for e-visa

It looks pretty simple and straightforward. I will update this post as well.

However for some reasons if you still want to go ahead with regular procedure then I can share my experience. I didn’t have any invitation but had submitted documents as shown in this post. You should submit your hotel bookings. You can do it from bookings.com for free and cancel it when you get the visa. Later you can book via airbnb although I feel airbnb bookings should be fine as well as long as they contain your name.

      Good luck.

  63. HOBOinkaps 7 November, 2015 at 10:00 PM Reply

My bad Makrand! I think I got confused somewhere in between the several comments. Thank you for sharing your personal experience. That should be helpful. However, the e-visa thing is only for people holding valid Shengen visa. So, that’s really of no use to me since I’m not travelling anywhere else in Europe and don’t intend on applying for one. I guess I’ll have to do it the good old way by actually going to the consulate. Just not sure about the hotel bookings bit and in some places on the internet they have mentioned this invitation requirement. Just hope it isn’t mandatory after all.

    • Makrand 7 November, 2015 at 10:13 PM Reply

My apologies for the confusion. I visited the e-visa site today and saw India listed there. I remember I had not seen India earlier so I got confused and assumed schengen visa is not required now.

However embassy website states that e-visa does require a prior schengen visa so this option is not useful.

I had applied to mumbai consulate and didn’t submit any invitation letter. Hotel bookings copies worked fine. You can try contacting embassy or inquire with a travel agent. I had sent my queries to embassy and they had responded with answers so you might get response from there. Also vfs website doesn’t mention about invitation letter.

    Hello Makrand!
Thank you for for taking time out and making an effort to help people with their visa queries.
Though your post covers everything about Turkish visa, I have a question.

I’m planning to go to Turkey in March for 20 days with my partner.
We both don’t have jobs. We are freelancers. She’s a writer and I’m a cinematographer. So we don’t have any fixed monthly income and are usually broke. But hopefully we shall be able to generate enough money for 20 days of road trip in Turkey.
Now that you have a little bit of our background, the question I have is this.
Should my bank balance be at least ₹1lakh at all times in the six months of bank statements I submit? Or just the latest bank balance must be ₹1lakh.

In your opinion, how much money should we both have (individually) for the embassy to believe we’d be able to sustain in Turkey for 20 days?

Also, in terms of hotel bookings, is it okay to show the embassy the booking confirmations on websites like booking.com where the hotels are booked in advance but payment happens only when you actually check in. I’m planning a road trip, so if I get delayed at one place, it would have a domino effect in all my subsequent hotels bookings. So I’m choosing to just book and not pay in advance.

How much time did it take to get your visa?

    • Makrand 19 November, 2015 at 9:11 PM Reply

      Hi Saket,

There is no hard and fast rule as I am aware of but as a thumb rule you should maintain consistently good balance around 1 lac. It may vary 10-20 k here and there as per my understanding. Transferring a big amount just before application is not a good idea.

I believe anything around 2 lac should be enough.Again this is based on the checklist that I had received when I had applied.

Bookings from bookings.com are perfectly fine. I do it all the time.

For me it took 8 working days.

Also as you will not be having salary slip, in your covering letter you can mention yourself as self employed and mention your professions. The whole idea is to establish your credibility. If possible try to get in touch with any freelancer who has applied for europe or Turkey visa as they can provide better inputs in your scenario.

  65. Saket 19 November, 2015 at 11:36 PM Reply

Thank you for the answer, Makrand!

My account won’t show a drastic. increase in funds right before visa application but gradual rise of funds till February to a total that should be sufficient to sustain for 20 days in Turkey.

I shall keep my fingers crossed and hope we get a visa!

Also I hope ISIS doesn’t sabotage my travel plans!

Thank you so much Makrand for the reply. Wish you awesome trips ahead! And hope you strike out lots of things in your bucket list!

good evening sir! i would like ur opinion on a couple of things. offlate the turkish embassy receives application only via e-appointments. since i was unaware of it, n appointment m getting is 11 days later wat should i do. my travel date is just 14 days away!!
secondly when i contacted embassy they listed a requirement for pcc for tourist visa also. when i applied pcc and got appointment after ten days they didnt entertain me saying pcc isnt issued for tourist visas. how can i prove to embassy that tourist visa applicants arent issue pcc in india. another question i have is , since m self employed working with my father in shop and not having salary slips, will my bank statement be enough. i dont have a credit card too. what can help?

    • Makrand 5 December, 2015 at 11:14 PM Reply

      Hi Ankit,

I am also not aware of online application process which might have changed recently because vfs website still mentions about older process. Does the new process also mentions about processing time. If you are getting appointment only after 11 days with travel date after 14 days then you have a risky plan because as per the earlier process the processing time was minimum 3 days.

Which consulate are you applying – Delhi or Mumbai because in Mumbai pcc is not required. I didn’t have to submit any. As you are self employed then you should mention that in your covering letter in detail about your shop along with your approx monthly revenue. I would advise to contact a good travel agent in your area and also get his inputs

A combination of your bank statement and credit card statement might act as proof of funds but as per the letter I had received from consulate (attached in the post above), minimum balance of 1 lac was clearly stated. In Chennai currently i am doing business with my brother and its family business, he has ( only his name, not a partnership firm legally) company registration certificate. if i apply as an employee of our family firm how can i show salary slip, leave sanction etc., and i did not file IT return as salary income but business income form 4 ( and not TDS also from company) but i can show more than 1 lack in my bank statement( last six month 18 lakh turn over and balance 5 lakh above)

and other hand, if i apply self-employed can i use company letter head and company registration certificate which is registered with brother’s name (actually its family firm) for preparing covering letter and proof of accommodation etc., ( i can produce with my name separate rent agreement for proof of accommodation) and i can attach company IT return ( brother name), company registration certificate, company bank statement.

plan to travel our four member family (spouse and two children).

The covering letter should be written from director’s side addressing to embassy and it can mention that CEO will be bearing expenses. Signature will be from director as he is the applicant. However I would advise first to check visa types for Turkey if the event is a corporate event as it my fall into category of business visa.

I am writing this because I need your help and advise for my friend from India who would like to meet me in Samsun for the Deaflympics. Hi Bruce,

I am honored to be contacted by you. I can give you some inputs based on my knowledge and your travel agent in Delhi can help further. Agent can also help your friend in submitting application at Turkish Embassy in Delhi. You can write a covering letter to embassy mentioning you will be bearing your friend’s expenses along with mentioning your financial standing to prove embassy that you are capable of taking care of expenses for both. Your friend can submit your letter along with his covering letter. In his covering letter he can mention about you. Along with application your friend will submit airlines and hotel booking confirmation vouchers. You are already helping your friend witch bookings and expenses once he will be in Turkey. To make your application strong, you can attach any proof of attending previous events in the past. . Good luck for the Olympics.
